Dear Creekside Families,

A huge thank you to Mrs. Buecker, staff and family members who gave their time, our Creekside PTO, and everyone who supported our Book Fair this week!  We love seeing our Cubs get excited about reading, and seeing new books in their hands is one way to build their excitement!

We are also grateful for all family members who support reading at home.  Taking just a little time each day to read with your child adds up overtime to help your child develop skills as a reader and their own personal love of reading.  Reading to your child, listening to your child read, and taking turns reading pages are all time well-spent.  Depending on your child’s age and reading level, we encourage you ask your child questions from the list below while reading together:

  • What is this book about?

  • (Pausing at a chosen moment) What just happened in the book?

  • Do you see any snap words (words they have memorized and can identify immediately from practicing in class) on this page?

  • Is this book fiction (made-up) or nonfiction (reality/truth)? How do you know?

  • Who is the main character?

  • What do you think will happen next?

  • Did you like this book? Why or why not?

  • Do you have anything in common with any of the characters in the book?

  • Are (name two characters or things in the book) similar or different?  How?

  • What is the main idea of this book?

  • What is the author teaching us in this book?

By engaging in conversation with your child about books, you help them develop skills and confidence as a reader while directly supporting the things they are working on at Creekside.  And, it’s fun for everyone!  Not sure which books are appropriate for your child at home?  Please reach out to your child’s teacher for helpful suggestions on books.  We’re happy to help!

We hope you have a great weekend and find some time to enjoy new or familiar books with your Cub!

Partnering with you to support our Cubs,

Todd Hartman, Principal
